The Hunter Radio Group Monday evening news net is taking a break until early next month.   The VK2BWI Thursday evening slow morse training session is also taking a break until early February. The WIA National Office is closed until the middle of this month.   The Mid Summer VHF Field Day is coming up in the middle of this month. It includes a team operating from our highest mainland mountain. We need more clubs to advise about their meeting dates. Many clubs do not hold a January meeting. Some new items have been arriving. Major items will be listed on the A.R.N.S.W web site later in the month. The 40 metre A.M service has been restored. We had tried to operate it last week but a problem occurred in a piece of coax. A new run has been installed and the system checked out. This is on a seperate antenna to that connected to the callback transceiver. Reports would be most welcome in the callbacks or by an email to news@arnsw.org.au . Between Christmas and New Year two of our phone lines into the site also decided to take a holiday - these were the station phone and the FAX so we were unable to receive the 6 metre DX report from Jack VK2XQ last Sunday. These phones have both been restored. Annual General Meeting. The A.R.N.S.W Council met last Friday and dealt with a range of topics. A question was asked in the callbacks last week about the origin of the W.I.A emblem. At this stage we do not have an answer other than to say it has been in use for a considerable time. It is unique in a badge of an Amateur Radio Organisation. Most of the world uses the diamond shaped badge with various combinations of the antennas, coil and capacitor symbols together with the initials of the organisation. The W.I.A has a diamond badge as well as Australia and the wings. The diamond was introduced a few decades ago, mainly for international travellers as the diamond is considered more easily identified by other Radio Amateurs. The badge of Australia helps with other people to identify where you come from - be that good or bad.  The Australian badge has appeared in many versions, sometimes forgetting VK7. The wings have been drawn in different styles and it has been said by some to be those which identify navy service personal who are in communications. The first major use of 'wireless' was - as covered in todays technical segment - related to ships.  Some listener may be able to provide further information like the report we received about an item in last weeks technical segment. Last week it was mentioned that it was not known if George Taylor - who chaired that first meeting - was ever an Amateur. This was picked up by Brain Kirby who went to the trouble to detail a lot about wireless activities around 1910. It appears that Mr. Taylor never ever transmitted any wireless signals himself nor was he ever a wireless inventor as a search of patent records indicated. Very interesting, thank you very much Brian. We may be able to incorporate some of those facts in a future technical segment. Advised by Tim VK2ZTM. ARRL DX news for the 7th of January. MALDIVES, 8Q.
